Pool closing, or winterization, protects a swimming pool from freeze damage. The water level is adjusted, removable hardware is taken out, plumbing lines are blown out and plugged, winter chemicals are added, the filter, pump and heater are drained, and the cover is fitted securely for the season.
A New Jersey winter does not have to be unusually severe to damage a pool. Water left in a return line can freeze and expand once, leaving a split pipe beneath the deck by spring. Professional winterization protects the plumbing, equipment, surface and cover—and is far less costly than repairing preventable freeze damage.
We lower the water to the correct level for the pool and cover type—low enough to protect the skimmer, but not so low that a vinyl liner is stressed. Ladders, handrails and removable equipment are taken out. The skimmer, return and main-drain lines are blown out and sealed with winter plugs so standing water cannot remain in the plumbing and freeze.
The filter, pump and heater are drained, and removable drain plugs are taken out and stored with the equipment where appropriate. Winterizing chemicals are added to help control algae and water quality beneath the cover during the off-season.
Finally, the winter cover is positioned and secured for the specific pool. We check the fit, fastening points and visible condition so wind, debris and winter weather are less likely to compromise the protection before spring.
The best closing window is after the water has cooled but before the first hard freeze. Closing too early can encourage algae under the cover, while waiting too long risks frozen plumbing and difficult working conditions. The objective is reliable protection from freeze damage. Above-ground pools use a different checklist from in-ground pools; if a worn vinyl surface is discovered, we can discuss liner replacement. After reopening, routine water and equipment care can continue through a coordinated pool maintenance plan.
