The pool is drained and its equipment, plumbing connections, liner and fittings are removed. An above-ground pool can typically be dismantled completely. An in-ground structure is broken up and then partially or fully removed according to the agreed scope, site access, future plans for the yard and applicable local requirements. The remaining void is filled with suitable material in controlled lifts and compacted to reduce later settlement, dips or unstable ground.
Partial removal generally removes the upper wall sections, creates drainage openings in the floor and backfills the remaining structure. It is typically faster and less disruptive. Full removal takes out the entire pool structure and leaves a clean excavation to be filled and compacted. The appropriate approach depends on site conditions and how the land will be used afterward.
Permit, inspection and resale-disclosure requirements can vary by municipality and project type. Those requirements should be confirmed for the specific property before demolition begins, especially if a building, addition or other load-bearing improvement may later occupy the area.
Removing an above-ground pool is usually a smaller demolition project, but the ground beneath it is rarely ready to become lawn immediately. Base material, compacted sand or gravel must be removed or regraded, and the area prepared for drainage and topsoil. If you are undecided about removing an in-ground pool, compare the cost with targeted repairs such as liner replacement. A structurally sound pool may sometimes be more economical to revive and protect through scheduled pool maintenance than to demolish and restore the site.
